How to Pose Naturally for Your Business Headshots

Hey there! If you're feeling a bit uneasy about how to pose for your business headshots, you're not alone. It's a common worry, and guess what? Most of my headshot clients go through it! Generally, people do not love to be photographed. As a professional photographer 20 years of experience here in Murrieta and Temecula. I've spent my career helping people feel comfortable in front of the camera, and I'm here to help you do the same.

It’s a common scenario. You're prepping for your headshot session. You've got on your favorite professional outfit and hair on point, but as soon as you step in front of the camera, you freeze. "What do I do with my hands?" "Is my smile too forced?" You start to feel self-conscious, and that dream of looking professional seems to be slipping away. Sound like your fear? Believe me, you’re not alone.

I get it. The fear of looking unprofessional can be daunting. You want to land that dream job, make a great first impression, and feel confident in your photos. But sometimes, the pressure to get it right can make it all feel overwhelming.

But let’s flip that script. This is how it will actually play out: You walk into my cozy studio in Murrieta, greeted by a friendly face (that's me, Amy!). You can feel relaxed because you know I've got your back. We can chat a bit about your business and the vibe you’d like to go for, and before you know it, you’ll be smiling as my camera snaps away. From head to toe, I’ll direct your pose and expression to capture you at your most natural and confident. You see the photos and think, "Wow, I look like me, but the best version of me!" That’s the goal, my friend.

So, how do we get there? Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you pose naturally for your business headshots:

1. Be Yourself: I know, easier said than done. But the best photos happen when you're being authentically you. Think about something that makes you happy or talk about a subject you love. This will bring out genuine expressions.

2. Relax Your Body: Stand or sit up straight, but stay relaxed. Shake out any tension before the shoot. You can even do a little dance to loosen up!

3. Use Your Hands: Of course, I will give you direction from head to hands to toes. But, don’t worry about where to put them. Natural gestures are your friend. You may want to hold a prop like a pen or a tool related to your business or rest just your hands in your lap.

4. Angles Are Key: Again, I will direct all of your posing. The idea is to turn slightly to the side instead of facing the camera head-on. It creates a more dynamic and flattering look.

5. Smile With Your Eyes: Known as the "smize," a term coined by Tyra Banks. Think about something that makes you happy, and let that joy reach your eyes.

Take a moment to reflect on what makes you feel most like yourself. Is it a favorite hobby, a beloved pet, or a funny memory? Use that to bring out your natural expressions during the shoot.

Remember, my goal at Amy Dawnelle Modern Heirloom Photography is to make you feel comfortable and confident. Whether you're in Temecula, Murrieta, or Menifee, I'm here to help your headshots shine.
